We are sorry to inform you that Lyal L. passed away on January 12th. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Our First meeting of the year was met with snow and although missing a few
members, there were plenty of members that did arrive.

John’s presentation “What the Heck?” was a great success. It is the best of 2022.
We learned about ½, 2 and 3 cent coins and why they were used. He also talked
about Trade Dollars made between 1854 and 1889 due to a Silver surplus. The
coins were issued to promote trade with China that liked the Silver coins. John also
showed us examples of Foreign coins he has collected from USSR, Russia,
Palestine which is now Israel and Vietnam before it was South Vietnam. It really was a
good example of non-traditional collecting that can be very interesting.

Hopefully, John’s presentation will inspire others to discuss the topics they have
hidden knowledge about regarding coins. If there is a topic you want to know more
about, please let me know. The officers are interested in what you want to learn more
about.

Trivia: What is the only year a 3 cent piece was made with a mint mark?

The wheat penny design was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham
Lincoln’s birth. The wheat penny design was used until the 150th Anniversary of
Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The New design in 1958 replaced the Wheat sheaves with
the Lincoln Memorial which had been erected in 1922. Which is now 100 years old.
The U.S. Mint will be releasing the first in a 4 year series “American Women Quarters”.
The first woman honored is Maya Angelou who died in 2014. She was an American
Poet and Civil Rights Activist. Her Poem “On the Pulse of Morning” was recited in the
Inauguration of President Clinton in 1993. In Maya Angelou’s Poem(1993) she says

“To look up and out upon me, the Rock, the River, the Tree, your country. No less
to Midas than the mendicant. No less to you now than the mastodon then. Here
on the pulse of this new day you may have the grace to look up and out and into
your sister’s eyes, into your brother’s face, your country And say simply, very
simply with hope Good Morning.”
